Claude Monet, public domain
In this classic painting is a glimpse of a slower, easier time. It’s possible this picture was inspired by the Japanese artist Hokusai. Japanese color wood-block prints were popular, and it was common for the artists of the time (Monet, Manet, Renoir, etc) to collect wood-block prints. Monet spent the summer of 1867 in Sainte-Adresse near Le Havre, France, where he painted this picture. It’s likely Monet used his father as the model for the man in the foreground, his cousin’s wife with her father for the figures at the fence, and the cousin’s wife’s sister as the person with her back towards the viewer.
